Help Our Wildlife!
The world is in the middle of the biggest extinction event in 65 million years and human activities are the key reason. The trend is global but Indonesia's many islands are a hot spots. Driven by population explosion and economic pressure, tropical forests are being cut down for timber extraction and land converted into farms and palm oil plantations for biofuel production. Overnight, whole ecosystems are being destroyed. There are over 100 threatened or endangered bird species in Indonesia, more than anywhere else in the world.
Faced with this enormous challenge, Dr Bayu Wirayudha and his colleagues, have gained international recognition working with local communities in Bali and Borneo, instilling pride and appreciation of local wildlife and preserving and restoring wildlife habitats. Against huge odds, these Indonesian veterinarians and wildlife carers, artists and educators have worked tirelessly to promote captive breeding programs, ecotourism and wildlife education to try to ensure that endangered island species can survive alongside humans. We stand in admiration of the work that Bayu and the Friends of the National Parks are doing, particularly with bringing their beautiful Bali Starling back from the brink of extinction. As Australian veterinarians and wildlife carers, artists and educators, we want to help our Indonesian colleagues consolidate and expand on their wildlife preservation initiatives during this pivotal time in their country's development.
